Edge Servers and a Content Delivery Network

A Content Delivery Network or CDN uses Edge Servers or Nodes to store and distribute information around the world-wide web. This is an alternative to traditional servers which possesses many benefits over the technology consumers recognize best. Who are Edge Servers for and what are those benefits?

Who Is the Edge for?

Without getting technical here at first, anyone can subscribe to web service using a CDN. The question is, do you want to pay the fees for a CDN when you don’t need them? Blog writers probably do not require faster service or protection from traffic surges. Neither does a company that posts a one-page website which acts as a reference than an interactive site; the kind that gives you an address and phone number with one picture of the organization’s headquarters.

An organization whose page is interactive, however, will require a different sort of technology to ensure programs are always available, running smoothly, and that they don’t take five minutes to load. This might be a PC or mobile website.

Static Vs. Dynamic Content

In other words, your site is either static or dynamic. A few years ago, a number of innovative wineries began creating problematic websites which featured moving elements, even animated graphics. You would touch a picture and it would lift up to reveal information or a sub-heading. Loading them onto any computer that was not completely up-to-date took forever and nearly crashed the user’s system.

Today’s website designer would insist this page be hosted on a CDN and the end user would need the latest technology too; Java or Adobe, etc. Items like these, videos, and video games are dynamic.

Static content, items like articles and photographs, don’t place the same demands on servers as dynamic pages. They do not cause the same potential spike in traffic. Risks to downtime are not very high and if a site did, in fact, crash, users would not lose their place as they might in the middle of a game. If a server hosting a video game crashed, the past hour of use might simply disappear and one’s achievements would be lost.

Selective about Service

Experts also recommend that if traffic is high and the spread of consumers is worldwide, a Content Delivery Network is preferable to the alternative, even though a lot of customers fail to recognize the difference. Content delivery is speedier when there are servers at shorter intervals versus the usual hundreds, even thousands of miles between them.

Edge Servers cope better with unexpectedly large amounts of traffic arriving at one time; they are more scalable because delivery can be re-routed through less-occupied servers along the CDN but still nearby. Edge servers store and direct information. If one is full, another node along the route can take up some of the overflow at a distance relatively close to the original node.

Mobile Content

Customers seeking web hosting services which will transfer between PC and mobile devices will often seek out CDN service. They have previously experienced trouble with download speeds and security caused by interruptions to service and traffic surges, but when Edge Servers are employed and uptime is virtually guaranteed, content delivery is quick and secure.
